Bucket List: #25- Have an Unforgettable Spring Break

Spring Break 2011 was one that I will NEVER forget. I went on a retreat trip to Destin, Florida with Campus Life. Campus Life is a youth group in my old high school for Christians who are looking to get to know one another while becoming closer to God at the same time. The trip started with a very long (19 hour) bus ride from Indiana to Flordia.

During the bus ride we had a change to get to know one another a little better and discuss what we expected from the week that laid ahead of us. Most of us were excited for the opportunity to grow in our faith, some were looking forward to relaxing with God's great creation, the ocean, and others were anticipating the long evenings at the pool with close friends. I, personally, was looking forward to all of the above. I was excited to get to meet new people, but I had no idea what God had in store for me that week.
Every morning, we met up with our small group (mine is pictured above). In the small groups we discussed a lot of religion-related topics that eventually helped us to realize what areas we needed to improve in, and in which areas we were excelling in. It was an amazing time where we were given the chance to get to know peers from the other schools in Northern Indiana.
After our meetings with our small groups, we were given free time to do as we pleased. During this time on one of the days, a group of us found our little "pet," Pedro, a Portuguese Man of War.
Every day in the late afternoon, the Campus Life leaders organized a beach game for us. The teams for the games were your small group members. One of the games involved kiddy pools filled with water and Lucky Charms. The students had to scoop up Lucky Charms in our MOUTHS and spit them out into our small group leader's hand. He then had to sort them out and find a marshmallow of every color. It was slightly gross, but it gave us a chance to step out of our comfort zone, which is what Campus Life is all about. The game pictured about was one in which we had to crawl over and under our other team members, then lay down at the front of the line. After we reached the first cone, the last person just had to walk over the others until they reached the front (as seen above). The first team to reach the second cone, won.
My small group team after winning a tough beach game!
The Garbage Burger. Need I say more? You can find it at McGuire's Irish Pub in Destin. As you can see, they have the most bizarre sandwiches. The Hot Fudge Sundae Burger.. just as it sounds: a scoop of ice cream, hot fudge sauce, and a cherry, over a hamburger, topped with a bun. The Peanut Butter Burger.. A scoop of peanut butter on a hamburger. Surprisingly, both were good! They offer normal entrees as well for the light stomached people. But this Garbage Burger contains every single topping that they offer on one sandwich. The toppings include wasabi, ice cream, hot fudge, cheese, ketchup, mustard, peanut butter, and many, many more.
I have left out the biggest blessing of this trip. Though this is not where my boyfriend and I met, this trip sparked the flame in our hearts. We grew in our faith with one another and enjoyed many long walks on the beach. Since God brought us together, we do our best to keep him in the middle of our relationship, which is working amazingly for us. We have vowed that we WILL take another trip back to the beach that brought us together.
Another amazing high of the trip was the dolphin watch! We enjoyed seeing these amazing creatures of God so close to us! There is NO zoom in this picture!
Though I failed on this jump, I still love the picture:)
We WILL be back, Destin! And I will be praying for another great success for Campus Life next March!

Bucket List: #2- Watch the stars on the beach & #36- Dedicate a star to someone.

I had SUCH an amazing time in Destin, Florida over spring break this year. However, I will explain the trip in a different blog. To look at the stars is the same as looking at a painting that God has designed for YOU. It is such an amazing feeling to look into the night sky over the roaring ocean and seemingly look into the eyes of Heaven. The stars bring a piece of mind that no other can. They remind us every night that we are not alone. Take some time and appreciate them; it really is relaxing:) It is not funny how much we take this beautiful blessing for granted!
"If the stars should appear but one night every thousand years how man would marvel and stare." -Ralph Waldo Emerson
I named one star for my beloved Daniel. It is not official of course (you won't find it in any astrological book;). We laid in my backyard watching the stars one night and I decided to pick one for him. It had to be a random one though so he wouldn't forget which one it was. There had to be no doubt. To find this star, you have to look for the Big Dipper. Find it? Now find the corner of the "cup" that is the furthest from the "handle". Are you still with me? Now! Go directly to the left of this star. Do you see it? The little star that is staring back at you is Daniel's Star. Even though we are separated by miles and hours, we can look up into the night sky before bed, see this star, and know that we really aren't so far apart after all.

My Bucket List

After watching the movie, The Bucket List, I was inspired to create one of my own. Though not nearly as epic as Edward and Carter's list, my list has a lot of aspects to it that I hope will challenge me to get out and explore the world and God's amazing creations as well as others that are just random things that I would like to accomplish. As I complete my bucket list, I will create a blog to describe my experiences and what I potentially have learned from them. Here We Go!

As a new blogger, I am quite excited to start expressing  myself in a whole new way! I have recently discovered that writing is an amazing way for me to let off some steam and relax. Rest assured though, my blogs will NOT be filled with non-sense ranting... maybe just a little bit of what really gets under my skin.. but my goal is to post more good things than bad things. I want to bring light to my blessings and get rid of the bad. If I post something that is bothering me, it will be a way to let go and relieve myself of the burden.

Now that that is out of the way, I am Matalin, a Freshman at Indiana University. I turned 19 on October 21, though many still don't believe I am over 15. I am 5'3 with curly brown hair. I would like to think that I am a good a Christian, just trying to make it through the many trials that are laid down before me. As I blog, I am sure you will read about a few of the very influential people in my life. I can not see describing myself without mentioning them. My mother is an amazing woman. She is the strongest person I have ever met and I pray to someday develop her strength, courage, and pure kindness. She has been through so much, and she has helped me pull through a lot of trials as well, always turning towards our Lord. My sister is also a large structure in my life. Though her and I have taken different paths in our own lives, she continues to hold my hand through tough times. Just as when we were little girls, she is always standing up for me and protecting me from harm. Lastly, my boyfriend, Daniel, will likely be in most of my blogs (sorry dear;). Even though we are separated by 3 and a half hours, he is my support system. He has stood by me through this very rough transition from childhood to adulthood- high school to college. Even though I have hit some major bumps on my journey, he has not complained once. This man is amazing.

I have a passion for the medical field. I am currently a pre-nursing major facing the many stresses, which any nursing student can relate to, of attaining and maintaining straight A's in order to even be considered to be one of the 60 accepted nursing students out of the 200+ applicants each year. The course load is rough and my free time is limited, but that just comes with the environment, doesn't it? I also have a strong passion for the French language. I adore the pure elegance of the language and the ability to confuse my family by speaking in it occasionally! :) In the free time that I do have, I love to spend time on Skype with my friends from back home, relaxing in bed with a good book, or watching my favorite TV shows: Private Practice, House, and Gossip Girl.

Only 4 more days until I can head home for Thanksgiving break. Missing you, Mom♥
